Thanks to Fran Abrams, polymer clay artist and retired Montgomery County Arts & Humanities Council grants director (and community arts org advocate), I'll be joining the November group exhibit at Gallery Har Shalom.

Here's a bit about the Fall Exhibit at Gallery Har Shalom.

All art pieces will be available for purchase, with part of the proceeds benefiting Har Shalom.The gallery is located at Har Shalom Congregation, 11510 Falls Road, Potomac, Maryland.

Come by if you can—the reception will be Sunday, November 6, 11am to 1pm. I'm planning to bring a work or two in progress to the reception to show a bit about the process.

Two mountainscape collage-paintings in the Mama Earth show at Center for Green Urbanism, starting next week. Reception Friday evening, April 8th, 2011.

And at Art Hop Takoma, which is April 8 through 10, I have a half dozen or so collage-paintings on exhibit along with other artists and artisans at The Still Point Too.

And on Saturday, April 9th form 2 to 5pm, big Open House and Birthday Party celebration at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Artwork in Residence!

One of two large (for me) mountainscape collage-paintings is now in residence at the new location of Still Point Mind and Body. It's called Clear Cold Creek (27 x 32" framed). I started by laying magazine and found papers in a roughed-out landscape, then painted with acrylic, and then layered on more papers and made marks with pen and marker.

Sunday night, Takoma Park (Maryland) artists and activists met at the very groovy Jackie's for an evening of socializing and on-the-spot discussion and suggestions for the city Arts & Humanities Commission.

The very brilliant and capable John Borstel and his team facilitated an adapted open space meeting. Lots of assets and possibilities exist in this community. And (I'm afraid), quite a bit of stuck assumptions and thinking. Hoping and looking forward to some new directions, fresh energy, and dynamic collaboration to come.

This painting (Janus) responds to Tom's report of waking up after brain surgery to the visage (or alternate visage) of another patient. A patient who's had a drawing of a face tatooed to the back of his bald head.

Five of my framed collage-paintings and -drawings are available at the Pyramid Atlantic Community Store in downtown Silver Spring. Just visited this afternoon and they are hung and look good (I think) in the space. All of these pieces have been shown in at least one previous solo or group exhibit: Stare Mesto (Old Town), Early Summer Pastoral, Ampersand, Bridge in Black and White, Cinderella Dreams.

• ChangeMatters is wrapping up strategic planning and fundraising projects with a handful of local cultural organizations: Arts on the Block, Institute for Musical Traditions, Rockville Musical Theatre, and Gandhi Brigade (see the collaborative collage work in progress, at left).
• Recently joined the board of Pyramid Atlantic Art Center — helping to grow the organization with entrepreneurial director Jose Dominguez and learning about printmaking and collecting with nurturing artist Helen Frederick.
• Helped Joe’s Movement Emporium take up residency at Takoma Park Elementary School for two days in the Spring.
• Curating at Space 7:10, 963 Bonifant St. in downtown Silver Spring: outsider art in August, lithographs in September, illustration art in October, mixed media in November and December, photographs in January.

About the Artwork

These collage-paintings are experiences in structured improvisation, influenced by and in the tradition of some forms of post-modern dance and performance. They also use what musicians or dj's might call mixing or sampling, because they involve combining, reorienting, layering, and altering unrelated snips of existing images. They layers of collage, paint, and drawing are built, bit by bit, over time. Some pieces start with painting or drawing. Others start with collaged papers. Rather than suggesting a specific narrative, I am trying to reflect the individual’s connection with universal themes of autonomy, community, culture, and place. What interests me are the layered richness, irregular edges, and internal textures of mood.

Amy Kincaid began showing artwork in 2003, exhibiting in several juried competitions and receiving awards in mixed media. In 2005 and 2006, she had solo exhibits in alternative spaces, and in 2007 was featured in a three-woman show at Artful Gallery in Washington, DC’s Atlas Arts District. A fundraising advisor to leaders in nonprofit organizations, she curates a local alternative gallery and performance space. Kansas City-born and-raised, Amy lives in Takoma Park with her husband, Neal Jeffries, and two young children.

I made this collage a few years ago, musing about the soldiers I imagined had enlisted at a time when the world felt less terrifying. Theirs was far from my own experience, and I felt tender and mystified about these young adults who seemed to be in a situation beyond them—a situation that must have been disorienting, disappointing, dangerous, and decidedly unAmerican.

This woman soldier is "over there" reflecting on the promise of purple mountain majesty versus the harsh reality of how America intends to fulfill but continues to break this promise, both at home and far away.
